Haters to the Left

Lana Del Rey: How did we get here?

Why are music critics and pop culture experts always puzzled about the origins of a pop star? Where did she come from? Who is she? Is she fake? Was she created by the record industry?

Lana Del Rey is as real as Justin Beiber is. She is bringing back the old school vibes of a 60's star with the infection and vacantness of Lady Gaga. Pop music lately has been drawing from the past hence many old school diva voices: Adele and Florence and the Machine. The focus is on their powerful voices. Yes, Lana does not have a powerful voice, but she is coming from the same realm and style of music. Yes, her SNL performance was shotty but that was due to lack of preparation. The old school aesthetic is sometimes hard to translate on TV.

What Lana lacks is the ability to project that she is genuine and I think this is where all the hate stems from. She comes off as a fake, throwback singer who had a lobotomy. If she can somehow show her personality, which is somewhere deep down there, she could be a star.

Her career at this moment, seems like it is dead in the water. But it can be revived. They say any publicity is good publicity. Lana has the people talking, the haters hating, so she must be on the right track.

Haze

This is the view from my balcony. Everyday I watch vehicles whiz by to unknown destinations. The traffic lights flicker from green, to yellow, to red. There is something so timeless about this view. It appears things are always happening. The city never sleeps.

Everything is Purple

It's been two days since my roomie left for a "post holidays vacation" and I'm already going stir crazy. So far tonight has involved my normal night cap of wine, watching Modern Family, drinking some Cosmopolitians, watching Sid and Nancy, smoking some Marlboro lights, figuring out how to order them online, blasting Rod Stewarts' "Maggie May" and then looking at photos of Wiz Khalifia and Amber Rose. Conclusion is: I should not be left alone this long.
Cheers.

Helena Beat

Foster the People- "Helena Beat"
I know there is a lot of buzz and lip service about Foster the People, most of it negative. I even said "Foster the People are just a lame unpsychedelic version of MGMT." However; I am warming up to their main stream asses and this track/video is admitably fantastic.

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
And cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Any Colour You Like
