Wolf Like Me

So I may have "found" my soul mate. Enter Chris Ford, brother of my fav. Suzanna Ford from Spanish Moss. He was featured on stylelikeu.com and I am so in love.
Here are some quotes from Chris:

"Routine scares the shit out of me. But then, the life that I lead is probably a major fear for other people."

"I really like Krystal Simpson's take on menswear. I feel like she's a modern day Annie Hall with a touch of Charlie Chaplin."

"I get bored easily so I'm not afraid of change."

"Live by the seat of your pants. Have the most amazing experiences. I have a passion for life."

"Fashion is a fantastic form of personal expression. Changing a look can elevate someone's mood and sometimes change a self image."

"My favorite movie of all time is 'Almost Famous.' When music was the best, they didn’t sleep with the band, they were there for the music. That whole culture, the lifestyle, the music."

"I'm inspired by classic films and American history. I watch Anthony Bourdain travelogues to inspire me while working on creative projects. I love looking through classic photography, especially black and white military photos to connect with the past. [It helps me] put my own spin on what I'm designing."

"I’m in love with the 60's, 80's, and 90's. I love the cheesy high cut bikinis and tackiness of it all. I also love the passionate 70's rock era where it was all about free love and listening to great music, when music actually meant something. People would actually put on a record and fall in love with the whole thing."

And should I explain more? Watch the video here

Killer Queen

She keeps Moet et Chandon
In her pretty cabinet
'Let them eat cake' she says
Just like Mary Antoinette
A built-in remedy
For Kruschev and Kennedy
At anytime an invitation
You can't decline

Caviar and cigarettes
Well versed in etiquette
Extraordinarily nice

She's a Killer Queen
Gunpowder, gelatine
Dynamite with a laser beam
Guaranteed to blow your mind
Anytime

Recommended at the price
Insatiable an appetite
Wanna try?

To avoid complications
She never kept the same address
In conversation
She spoke just like a baroness
Met a man from China
Went down to Geisha Minah
Then again incidentally
If you're that way inclined

Perfume came naturally from Paris
For cars she couldn't care less
Fastidious and precise

Drop of a hat she's as willing as
Playful as a pussy cat
Then momentarily out of action
Temporarily out of gas
To absolutely drive you wild, wild
She's all out to get you

Recommended at the price
Insatiable an appetite
Wanna try?
You wanna try?

Swag To Kill For

Safe to say Wayne is back. This track is on par with Tha Carter II. It's about time!

Powa Up!

I'm a big Tron fan. I have a little 45 from the original film along with a read along story book.
But, I am super stoked to see the Disney magic that will grace screens everywhere on Friday.
I can already tell it's set for success: Daft Punk made the soundtrack, it's in 3-D and Garrett Hedlund is Sam Flynn.
The above is a little preview. Enjoy

Free Style to Weezy

More than anything right now
I want to be myself-
My true self that loves disco,
And smokes Marlboro's to Edie Sedwick videos on youtube.

I look at photos of things that inspire me and I just want to live.
Live to be myself-
Not anyone's girl, woman or trick.
I just want to be me

The one that gets a boner over vintage
The one that loves bubble tea
The one that just wants to dance in the club free style to Lil Wayne
The one that loves Led Zeppelin and The Byrds more than life
The one that loves western shit and wants to rock a bolo tie.

I want to be myself every day but I always feel like something is holding me back
Maybe it's peoples opinions?
It must be
Because if i let it all go
I would be wearing some fucking fab things.

Or it could be laziness?
Either way I feel that no one understands me.
People accept me but they don't get me except the few loves.

The don' t get that I die to write
That I die to listen to music
That I die to drink wine and have a good conversation
I die to dance to some 80's jam
They don't get it and I probably don't get them

So really I want to show more of myself some how
The easiest way is through dress
I should let it all go, rock a bolo and gaucho.

Long Nights, Red Wine

There is something about this band that really caputures me. I saw an ad for their first album in Rolling Stone in 2006. I went and bought the album and fucking loved it.

The vocals are creepily sexy in a non Marilyn Manson way. More like Paul Banks from Interpol blended with some Bravery and Julian Casablancas. The music is edgy and dark but still dancey. All the songs are about sex, love and clubs, which fits perfectly with the music.

When I hear She Wants Revenge, I want to prowl around a club in heels, clutching a glass of wine, and dance. This band is all about atmosphere and I really can't describe it anymore other than what the above video captures.

Psychedelic Disco Cactus

Lately, I've been a whore for disco and Miami Horror has satisfied this modern day urge.
The video is fantastic. It's psychedelic Marlboro Man in the desert meets disco diva on a horse.
All of my loves combined. Fucking glitter it out...

The Rock and Roll Myth

I couldn't figure out what was so appealing to me about Rock and Roll for the longest time. It wasn't my childhood. I was raised on country music. It wasn't the music itself. Some of it, I could do without.

So I dug and dug into my soul and I have finally figured it out: it's the myth, the legend that accompanies each band that I worship that draws me in.

When I listen to Led Zeppelin, I am convinced Robert Plant is singing to me, telling me that he wants to be my "backdoor man."

When I hear the Stones, I buy into their excessive boozy image. I buy into the heroin mythology of Keith and the mystery that surrounds Brian Jones death.

When Freddie Mercury hits those insanely high notes, he is sharing in my search to find "Someone to Love."

When Iggy Pop carouses around the stage freaking out on drugs, and rubs peanut butter on his chest, he embodies my sense of adventure.

Rock and Roll says everything I want to say. It says "I fucking hate you", "I love you", "I want to sleep with you", and "I want nothing to do with you". It says everything that is hidden deep below the surface.

So when I put on a Who track, like "Behind Blue Eyes" I really do mean, what is going down behind my blue eyes. I connect with it more than any other type of music no matter how carnal it is.

It's much like what Penny Lane says in Almost Famous (see previous post) when you get lonely, you go to a record store and visit your friends. I really do feel like Mick Jagger is a friend of mine. That I understand the inner workings of Gram Parsons, that Jimmy Page and I connect on a spiritual level.

Rock and Roll myth is that the Rock Stars get you. They understand you. They are your friends. So when I listen to the Doors, I say to myself: "He may not love me but Jim Morrison sure as hell does..."

Vinyl Vixen

"I always tell the girls, never take it seriously, if you never take it seriosuly, you never get hurt. If you never get hurt, you always have fun, and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends. "
- Penny Lane in Almost Famous

Everything always comes back to that movie. Here is an interview I did with a journalism student on my love for Vinyl:

Q: Why do you buy or listen to vinyl records? How many do you have and how often to you buy them?

A: There is something mystical about vinyl. Something about vinyl feels more authentic when you listen to it. The sound feels warmer and more inviting. I think with digital music we have lost the appreciation of the album and album art. With vinyl, you get to listen to the entire album. There is no need to skip from song to song, artist to artist, like you would in your itunes library. Vinyl has more focus on album art. I like vinyl because you get to hold something real in your hands.

I have over 100 records. A lot of them were given to me from my parents. I just started collecting vinyl on my own 2 years ago.
I usually buy a record a week. I live right buy an excellent record store so I stop in regularly to look through the discount bins.

Q: Where do you buy them? What are the stores like?

A: I buy records at Hertiage Music and Posters on 14th St. or at Hot Wax in Kensington. I also look for records at thrift stores like Value Village. Sometimes you can find some real gems.

Q: Do you buy old or new records? Or both?

A: I buy both used and new records. Older stuff is definatly cheaper to buy, but sometimes its neat to buy something newly release on vinyl. Overall, I would say my record collection is 80 % old, 20% new.

Q: Do you purchase CDs or digital copies of the vinyl albums as well, to put them on an mp3 player? Do any of the vinyl albums come with digital copies?

A: It really depends on the particular album whether or not I buy a digital copy of the vinyl album or not. Neil Young's album Harvest is one of my favourties so I have it on vinyl, cassette, CD and in my itunes library.

I haven't purchased any vinyl albums that have come with digital copies, but I do know that Arcade Fire's new album The Suburbs came with a digital copy. I think that is an excellent marketing idea to intice people to buy vinyl.

Q: Where did you get the record player to listen to the albums?

A: My dad had a record player from back in day, so I grew up listening to vinyl on that. Once I branched out on my own, I bought my own brand new turn table from The Source. I thought buying a new one was the best idea, rather than dealing with an old turntable that needs a new stylus or other parts replaced.

Enter Zachary

I've been called a honorary gay and frankly I feel very welcome amongst the "gay" culture,
So it is not surprising that I would develop and inner gay personality.
I often feel as though I have five personalities:
1) my true self- Sarah
2) my Internet self- Thyme Warp
3) my day dream self- Harley Vandal
4) my alter underdeveloped personality- Sahara
and
4) my inner gay man- who from tonight on will be affectionately called Zachary.

Zachary has been developing in me for so long, and he comes out most weekends, especially at gay bars when they blast Britney and Robyn.
(Please keep in mind that I am a straight girl very comfortable in her self)
Beyonce has an alter personality when she goes on stage called Sascha Fierce.
Bowie has had many alter personalities.
So really is it odd for me to channel Zachary?
He shall be called Zachary from Monday to Thursday, But from Friday to Sunday he's Zack. Get that straight bitch! Zachary shall be the outlet for all my dancing and trashy business. He's been around for a while and I am so glad to finally give him finally a name.
My friend Papa Roach helped me develop his name, as her "inner gay" is called Stanley, such a prestigious name.
This is not in jest, but rather a way to vent parts of my personality society tells me I am not allowed to show.
So Zachary shall be free to dance to as much Britney and Adam Lambert as he wants...

Tinsel Times

The holiday season has commenced!
I've been feeling fairly nostalgic for Christmas this year.
It is honestly my favorite holiday of the year,
so the above photos are various vintage inspired 70's Christmas moments.
I love my grandmother's vintage ornaments, like her bubble lights
and tinsel. It makes me feel like I should curl up under a snuggie
and watch my Rudolph movies on VHS.
Cheers!

Sweet Black Angel

Down in the Hole

My source of inspiration Susanna Moss- Spanish Moss Vintage

"Will all your money
Buy you forgiveness
Keep you from sickness
Or keep you from cold?
Will all your money
Keep you from madness
Keep you from sadness

When you're down in the hole?
'Cause you'll be down in the gutter
You'll be bummin' for cigarettes
Bummin' for nylons
In the American Zone

You'll be down in the hole
Yeah, down in the hole
No escape from trouble
Nowhere to go
Down in the gutter
Beggin' for cigarettes
Beggin' forgiveness
All that you know
Down in the hole

After diggin' the trenches
Looking for cover and findin' out there ain't nowhere nowhere to go
Nowhere nowhere nowhere to go
None of your money
Will buy you forgiveness
None of your jewelry
None of your gold
Your black market cigarettes
Your American nightclubs
Ah, they've got nowhere left

Something for nothing
All of your friends gone
Something for nothing
That's all that you know

There's something down in the hole
Down down down in the hole
There's something down down down down in the hole"

Neverland

Empire of the Sun- "We are the People"

I discovered this band through Fashion Television. After each episode, they play a music video of a new group, and there was Empire of the Sun frolicing around in Shanghai for the track "Walking on a Dream." It was the most magical video I have ever seen. I was transfixed; colors were a plenty, visually stunning, and the music was beyond frolic worthy. I couldn't get over it so I bought the album Walking on a Dream and found this song.
This video is top notch stunningly magical.
They bring a little Neverland in Mexico meets Bowie and I can't help but love it.

Take My Hand

I knew tonight was ominous as we pre-drank to The Smiths.
That is not the best way to kick off a night out.
As Morrisey says:

"There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet someone who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die "

And "I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear"

So I knew it was ominous. As soon as I got home I played "How Soon is Now" the most beautiful song I have heard all day. I love the Smiths so much that I wish I could say they were part of my childhood just as Britney Spears and the Moffats. Unfortunately they are not, so I continue to seek information on them. Tomorrow I will go on a quest for the album "Meat is Murder" on vinyl and attempt to find a book on the Smiths or Morrisey himself.

Doodles

Yoshimi I'm Yours

"Do You Realize"- The Flaming Lips

I fall in and out of love with the lips. When I was 17 my best friend loved the lips and he specially ordered the lips album Zairekka that comes on for discs that you play simultaneously for mind blowing experiences. This was Phase One.

Phase Two was a year and a half later. I bought the EP Flight Test and fell in love with "Do You Realize." I grooved on it for a few months and then pushed it aside.

Phase Three was most epic. A few years later I went to an outdoor music festival, and the lips were there. For the show I was up quite close to the stage, and Wayne rolled over me in his bubble. The lips shot out all of this confetti with some type of gun while "Do You Realize" was playing. The way the confetti fell through the air was enchanting. I was in love once again.

Phase Four is now; again a few years later. I began following Wayne on twitter and I have fallen in love again. His tweets are witty and psychedelic. But, by far the best part of following Wayne is his doodles. I sent him a tweet expressing my love, and he direct messaged me back saying "Thanks!" I almost exploded. What a nice guy! What epic doodles! I love the Flaming Lips!
